ZOONOTIC UROPATHOGENIC ESCHERICHIA COLI IN

NORTHWEST ECUADOR: INCIDENCE AND RISK FACTORS

Topocragphic 1 Green_edited.png

Project Objectives

We seek to characterize drivers of Uropathogenic E. Coli (UPEC) epidemiology in northwestern Ecuador. Specifically, we aim to quantify the percent of human UPEC infection that come from chicken compared to humans, and assess the behaviors and environmental conditions associated with risk for colonization and infection. We will carry out active surveillance at regional hospitals and follow 420 households prospectively. We hypothesize that poultry will be an important source of UPEC infection in humans

The EcoZONT study began in 2022 and is still ongoing.

Lab work in Ecuador is conducted at:

Hospital Study

We collect urine samples from all hospital patients in our study site that present with UTI symptoms and we isolate E coli to identify uropathogenic E. coli. We also collect control samples of patients not presenting with UTI symptoms.
